About Our Founder

Amin Poonja is a professional biologist and has worked in the fields of pest management and public health for over 30 years. He has worked in Africa, Europe and North America.

EDUCATION

He completed his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Ottawa and a postgraduate in pest management from Simon Fraser University.

COMPANY FOUNDATION

Amin Poonja established Ecopest Inc. in 1990, Armed with the latest in technology and education, started breaking new ground by implementing integrated pest management and promoting Eco-friendly products. Today Ecopest is the largest independent pest control company in Edmonton.

PUBLIC SERVICE

He served as president for the Pest Management Association of Alberta and member of board of directors of CPMA (Canadian Pest Management Association) from 2002 to 2008. Also been Yellow Pages advisory board member from 1995 to 1999.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Over the last 20 years or so, he has been actively involved in volunteering on various institutional bodies including being Chairman of the Aga Khan Education board of Edmonton, member of the Aga Khan Economic Planning Board for Canada, Aga Khan Conciliation and Arbitration Board for Edmonton and member of MRJC (Mediation and Restorative Justice Centre) Edmonton.

Integrated Pest Management

One of the most important aspects that the pests control industry currently facing is ability to develop eco-friendly treatment methods to minimize the pest infestations with minimal environmental impact. Ecopest is currently implementing and developing methods to monitor and treat insects as needed in Edmonton.

In order to minimize pesticides application and specialize in environmentally preferred alternatives, Ecopest focusses on an integrated approach to pest control. Monitoring pests and assessing the level of infestation which aids us in the judicious and effective use of pesticides. Aside from the environmental abuse, legislation has prohibited the use of pesticides as merely a preventive approach for insect control.

Amin Poonja is a professional biologist and has worked in the fields of pest management and public health for over 30 years. He has worked in Africa, Europe and North America.

EDUCATION

Sameer Thawer

Sameer Thawer

Operations Manager

Sameer’s interest and passion for pest control began in his role as a summer pest technician at Ecopest while completing his education in Engineering.

Upon graduation from Engineering, Sameer joined Orbis Engineering as a Junior Project Engineer and went on to lead the Project Planning Department with scope of maintenance planning, shutdown planning and management; Project Management of various Projects in diverse industries as well as business development.

This management and industrial experience coupled with his pest control exposure are what equip him to successfully lead as our Operations Manager at Ecopest.

Neil Ritokoski

Neil Ritokoski

Supervisor

Neil has had a Lifelong interest in the natural world of invertebrates and plants with a career spanning from forestry, landscaping and structural pest control. He was involved in forestry in several fields including dutch elm disease, regeneration studies including hands-on regeneration planting, botanical identification and insect pest collection and identification. In landscaping, Neil has experience in landscape construction, landscape maintenance, golf course maintenance, landscape design and landscape pest control all of which also required identification of botanical and invertebrate issues. Last but not least Neil has over 10 years in structural integrated pest management. In his role as supervisor at Ecopest he takes care of the supervision of the pest control technicians, client relations and quality assurance of the Ecopest scope of work.
